The Story Behind the Collection
Some ideas begin in the studio. This one began with a sentence I could not ignore.
During an exhibition, a woman looking at my Andy Murray collage asked me if I had ever made tennis balls. I said no. She smiled and said, “I love tennis balls.”
That stayed with me. After years of making portraits of players, champions, and icons of the game, I had never thought of painting the object where everything begins: the ball.
A tennis ball is not just an object. For a player, it is the beginning of every point, the sound of impact, the rhythm of practice, the pressure of competition, the memory of childhood, the silence before the serve, and the explosion after contact.
I looked at her and said, “I’m going to make some — and you will love my balls.” What started as a joke became a serious body of work.
YOU’LL LOVE MY BALLS transforms the tennis ball into a collector object: oversized, textured, physical, imperfect, intense, and full of movement.
About the Artist
Ernesto Ruiz Bry
Ernesto Ruiz Bry is an international artist, former professional tennis player, and high-performance tennis coach whose work connects art, sport, memory, discipline, and movement.
His practice includes large-scale collage works built from thousands of hand-cut pieces of recycled magazine paper and textured impasto paintings created with heavy acrylic surfaces.
In YOU’LL LOVE MY BALLS, Ruiz Bry returns to the object at the center of the game and transforms the tennis ball into a physical, humorous, intense, and collectible work of art.
